Atomic Wallet Hacked: Police of Estonia and Kazakhstan Investigating

Atomic Wallet, a non-custodial mobile crypto wallet, was hacked on June 3, with users losing over $100 million worth of crypto. CEO Konstantin Gladych confirmed that the team is cooperating with police of Estonia, where the company is registered, as well as police in Kazakhstan. We forwarded the request to the Estonian police and Chainalysis, to whom we provided all the information needed for investigation, Gladych said.

Atomic Wallet has had over 1 million downloads on Google Play, according to the app store’s data. The cause of the breach is still unclear, though CEO of a blockchain security firm Hacken Dyma Budorin suggested that the wallet might have been sending copies of users’ private keys to the company’s server, or that the hackers derived private keys from Atomic users’ transaction data or breached the wallet manufacturer’s infrastructure. Last year, the security firm Least Authority warned about security flaws in Atomic’s code.

Gladych did not comment on the possible cause of the hack. The team is providing data from the victims to blockchain analytics companies Crystal Blockchain and Elliptic, and exchanges and OTCs are using them to stop suspicious transactions.
